Police in Missoula are trying to figure out who sent letters to at least four registered sexual or violent offenders notifying them they have been selected for "intense civilian monitoring" of their behavior.

The letters use the name and return address and in some cases, the home telephone number, of a Missoula attorney that specializes in labor law.

Detective Jamie Merrifield says he's not sure if someone is trying to target the attorney or the offenders with the letters that warned at least one man that his vehicles may be subject to portable GPS tracking devices.

Merrifield says the offenders who received the letters are currently law abiding and one man's case dates back to 1887.

He says he's investigating it as a possible stalking case.
